Red Star Photos ❘ lookphotos
13999239 - This wide-field image frames the end stars of the Big Dipper's handle — Mizar at top,and Alkaid at bottom — and to also include in the frame the bright galaxies Messier 101 (at left) and Messier 51 (at lower right, aka the Whirlpool Galaxy). They are small on this image scale but the image serves for a finder chart illustration of the location of these galaxies relative to the Handle. The famous double star Mizar and Alcor is also obvious at top,as is the red giant star 83 Ursa Majoris. The field is 10° x 15°,so wider than binoculars.
13998328 - A green, red and magenta auroral curtain over the old Churchill Rocket Range,in the light of the waxing quarter Moon,February 26,2023. The Moon is in Taurus between the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters. At far right are Jupiter and Venus setting in the west. This is looking south and southwest.
13898929 - The Belt and Sword region of Orion, with the Orion Nebula, Messiesr 42 and 43, at bottom. Below the left star of the Belt, Alnitak, is the famous Horsehead Nebula, while above it is NGC 2024, aka the Flame Nebula. At very top left is Messier 78, while part of Barnard’s Loop arc across the field at left. The field is filled with other faint red emission and blue reflection nebulas. The large loose open cluster Collinder 70 surrounds the middle star of the Belt, Alnilam.
13898799 - An illustration of a red auroral curtain mixing with the green auroral arc to make an area of yellow-orange in the aurora this night. This was from home in Alberta on September 26, 2022. It frames the stars of Taurus rising with bright Mars at left and the Hyades star cluster at right.
13899183 - A portrait of the northern autumn constellation of Cepheus the King. The large red nebula at the bottom (to the south) is IC 1396. Mu Cephei is the red star, aka the Garnet Star, on its edge.

70502473 - A Chinese attendant in the Great Hall of the People, near a ceiling decoration of a giant red star, during a session of the National People's Congress, China's Parliament.
14249380 - This frames the rich region of the southern Milky Way in the small constellations of Norma (at centre) and Ara (at left and extending to the top). The bright Norma Starcloud is at bottom with the rich star cluster NGC 6067 ermbedded in it. The large red nebula at top is NGC 6188, aka RCW 108, that surrounds a loose star cluster NGC 6193. The nebula has become known as the Fighting Dragons of Ara, from its apperance in close-up images. To the right of the large nebula is the small double-lobed planetary nebula NGC 6164, though it is tiny at this image scale.
14249316 - This frames two contrasting nebulas on the border of Canis Major and Monoceros. At top is the large Seagull Nebula or IC 2177, an area of mostly red hydrogen-alpha emission and is a region of star formation, though it contains some blue reflection nebulas.
14249106 - The pair of small open star clusters in northern Orion: NGC 2194 at lower left, a rich cluster, and NGC 2169 at upper right, a loose cluster but with stars arranged in two groups making it look like a number 37 or an XY letter pair. The small red nebula at left above NGC 2194 is Sharpless 2-269.
14248996 - This is Messier 1, the first entry in Charles Messier's 18th century catalogue of deep-sky objects that were not to be mistaken for comets, his real quest. It is also NGC 1952, or the Crab Nebula, from the Earl of Rosse's 19th century description and naming. It is north of the lower horn of Taurus the Bull. This is a remnant cloud of debris expanding away from a supernova explosion that was witnessed in 1054 CE. All that's left of the progeniitor star now is a neutron star forming a spinning pulsar at the heart of the explosion debris. Some red H-alpha tendrils are obvious around the extremity
14248894 - This is a portrait of a field in the "club" of Orion the Hunter, in northern Orion, that contains the emission nebula (at top) catalogued as Sharpless 2-262, or LBN 863, but known popularly as Lower's Nebula for its discovery in 1939 by the father and son team of Harold and Charles Lower. Below it just right of centre is the small, loose star cluster NGC 2169, with its stars arranged in a number 37 or XY pattern. It is sometimes called the Number 37 Cluster. At lower left is the rich star cluster NGC 2194. The small red nebula above NGC 2194 is Sharpless 2-269, with faint Sh2-267 above it. A r
14248595 - There's no more colorful area of the deep-sky than this field in the head of Scorpius. A mix of red and magenta emission nebulas combine with blue reflection nebulas, and unique to this field, a yellow reflection nebula around the red giant star Antares at bottom. Dark dust lanes glow brown and yellow as well.
14209882 - Star trail over the stone chapel at Red Willow Vineyard. (PR)
14249418 - This frames the rich area surrounding the Galactic Centre, which is located at top centre here amid the dark lane of dust and above a small diffuse area of red nebulosity. To the left is the bright Sagittarius Starcloud, which contrasts with the dark lane that runs down the Milky Way. Nowhere else is there such a stark and sharp contrast between bright starclouds and dark lanes of dust. The star clouds show the yellowing effect of interstellar dust absorbing star light and reddening it.
14249347 - This frames most of the intricate arcs and loops of the Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR), the remains of a star that exploded about 11,000 years ago. It is one of the closest SNRs to Earth, about 900 light years away. Most arcs and segments have no separate catalogue numbers, with the exception of the short straight Pencil Nebula, aka Herschel's Ray, in the lower left corner which is NGC 2736. It is the brightest segment of the Vela SNR visually in a telescope. The nebula complex is marked with lots of cyan arcs emitting oxygen III wavelengths, mixed with regions of red hydrogen-alpha emission.
14249298 - This is the bright reflection nebula complex that includes Messier 78 (the largest blue-white nebula) and NGC 2071 above it. They are set in a region of dark clouds of interstellar dust, and framed by the red-magenta arc of the emission nebula known as Barnard's Loop, aka Sharpless 2-276. The small reflection nebula at upper left on the edge of another dark cloud is van den Bergh 62. The large star cluster left of centre on the edge of the Loop is NGC 2112.
13998813 - A rich starfield in the constellation of Vulpecula the Fox,in the Milky Way,with a mix of nebulosity. At bottom is the Coathanger asterism of stars, aka Collinder 399,or Brocchi's Cluster. At top left is the emission nebula NGC 6820. Other dark nebulas from the Lynds Dark Nebula catalogue populate the field. The blue glow above the Coathanger is reflection nebulosity which does not appear to have a catlogue number. A small reflection nebula around the blue stars at right is van den Burgh 126. The small round red emission nebula at lower left is Sharpless 2-82. The yellow star at top right is An
13998423 - A self-portrait of me observing the total eclipse of the Moon on November 8,2022,on a very cold (-25° C) morning at 4 am. Above the red Moon are the stars of Taurus including the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters.
13899799 - This is a framing of the rich array of nebulas in central Auriga. The complex of star cluster Stock 8 and IC 417 is at upper left. The large nebula at lower centre is IC 410 with the star cluster NGC 1893 embedded in it. The large nebula at right is IC 405, aka the Flaming Star Nebula, with a mix of red emission and blue reflection nebulosity.
13899593 - This is a framing of the rich array of nebulas in central Auriga.
13898290 - The summer Milky Way over and reflected in the relatively calm water of Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park, on a mid-October night. The Jasper Sky Tram adds the lights on Whistler Peak. Bands of airglow tint the sky with red. Lights from the Jasper townsite, still mostly unshielded sodium vapour lights as of 2022, add the skyglow at left. Altair is the bright star at top. The red Lagoon Nebula is just setting behind the mountain skyline. The slight wind rippled the water enough to prevent a perfect reflection.
13829468 - Red Cushion Star (Poronia Pulvillus) and Spiny Starfish (Marthasterias Glastialis) on a rocky reef in Kinlochbervie, Scotland. The green phyotplankton rich water highlights a silhouette of kelp.
13821185 - A beautiful glimpse of a deep Mediterranean landscape with black coral (Antipathella subpinnata), red sea-fan (Paramuricea clavata) and basket star (Astrospartus mediterraneus). Formiche di Grosseto (Tuscan Archipelago)
13999562 - My favourite target for testing telescopes, the North America Nebula,NGC 7000,in Cygnus, with its companion Pelican Nebula to the right, aka IC 5070. The bright star Deneb is at upper right. An odd little red nebula is to the right of the Pelican,of unknown identity as it is not in Deep Sky Atlas,Millenium Star Atlas,TriAtlas or SkySafari.
13999360 - A framing of a wide field in Aquila, with the bright bue-white star Altair at centre, with the red star Tarazed above, and the dimmer star of the trio,Alshain, below.
13998256 - This is a rich region in the Milky Way in northern Sagittarius. with four Messier objects: The Small Sagittarius Starcloud, aka Messier 24,is at right of centre, flanked by: the pink Messier 17,the Swan or Omega Nebula, above; and the star cluster Messier 25 at lower left. Above M25 at upper left is the star cluster NGC 6645. Below M17 is the small star cluster Messier 18. The small but rich star cluster embedded in the Starcloud is NGC 6603. The nebulosity at bottom is IC 1283,a red emission nebula; and NGC 6589/90 and NGC 6595,both blue reflection nebulas. The dark nebula on the west (right) si
13899970 - The small constellation of Sagitta the Arrow, in the Milky Way. The small globular cluster, Messier 71, is between Gamma Sagittae and Delta Sagittae. Below M71 is the very sparse star cluster Harvard 20. The emission nebula Sharpless 2-84 is supposedly at centre but does not show up here except perhaps as a dim blue area of reflection nebulosity, though there is some faint red emission nebulosity at lower right.
13899797 - Circumpolar star trails and aurora over the Red Deer River, Alberta from the Orkney Viewpoint north of Drumheller on May 5, 2018.
13898150 - The late-night spring Milky Way from my rural backyard in Alberta (latitude 51° N) on a fine May night in 2020, with the waxing Moon just setting and lighting the landscape and sky. Jupiter (brightest) and Saturn to the east (left) are just rising together at left, east of the Milky Way. West of the galactic centre at right is red Antares in Scorpius. The Small Sagittarius and Scutum starclouds are prominent at centre, with their various Messier nebulas and star clusters visible.
13999050 - A panorama of the Milky Way from Scutum (at left) to Serpens (at right),taking in the Scutum Starcloud just left of centre and the Messier 16 and 17 nebulas (the Eagle and Swan respectively) at right. The large faint patch of red above and left of M16 is Sharpless 2-54. The star cluster M25 is at lower right. The M11 and M26 clusters are visible at centre in Scutum.
13899037 - The wonderful open star clusrter NGC 6124 in Scorpius amid a field of dark nebulas and on the edge of a bright star cloud with red emission nebulosity. I call this the Dark River Cluster.
13899282 - A wide-angle view of the total eclipse of the Moon of November 8, 2022, with the red Moon at right amid the stars of the northern winter sky and Milky Way, plus with bright red Mars at top. Above and left of the Moon is the blue Pleiades star cluster, while below it and to the left is the larger Hyades cluster with reddish Aldebaran in Taurus. The stars of Orion are left of centre, including reddish Betelgeuse, while at far left are the two Dog Stars: Procyon, at top, in Canis Minor, and Sirius, at bottom, in Canis Major.
13899076 - Comet Lovejoy, C/2014 Q2 amid the clusters, nebulas and dark dust clouds of Taurus and Perseus, on Friday, January 16, 2016. Its long blue ion tail stretches back at least 15°, almost to the open cluster NGC 1647 on Taurus at the left edge. At centre is the Pleiades star cluster, M45; at top right is the red California Nebula, NGC 1499, in Perseus, while the field is filled with the dark dusty lanes of the Taurus Dark Clouds. At left is the red giant star Aldebaran amid the V-shaped Hyades star cluster.
13898365 - A framing of the Milky Way in Sagitta and Vulpecula below Cygnus. The stars of Sagitta the Arrow are at lower left. The distinctive asterism, the Coathanger, is at lower right embedded in the dark lanes of the Milky Way. It is also called Collinder 399 and Brocchi's Cluster. The green Dumbbell Nebula, M27, is just left of centre. The star Albireo is at top. Faint nebulosity inhabits the area, such as NGC 6820 left of the Coathanger, but as this was shot with an unmodified camera the red nebulas don't show up well here.
13999688 - Orion and the winter stars and constellations in a moonlit sky,on a chilly (-20°C) winter night on January 28,2023. Above Orion is Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster in Taurus. Below Orion is Sirius in Canis Major. The red giant Betelgeuse and the blue giant Rigel stand out nicely above and below the Belt. Light from the first quarter Moon off frame illuminates the landscape. This serves as a good illustration of how the Belt stars in Orion point up to Aldebaran and down to Sirius.
13999628 - The aptly-named Coathanger Cluster,a more properly an asterism of stars in Vulpecula. A true star cluster,NGC 6802,lies at the left end of the coathanger arm. The field contains diffuse blue reflection nebulosity which appears to not have a catalogue number. The small round emission nebula at bottom is Sharpless 2-82. A very small round red nebula above the right end of the Coathanger is Sh2-83.
13999258 - The open star cluster NGC 1528,at left, accompanied by the emission nebula NGC 1491,at right, aka the Fossil Footprint Nebula, both in Perseus. The very red star below NGC 1528 is SY Persei. The faint nebula at centre is unidentified – the nebulas Sharpless 2-209 and Sharpless 2-206 are in the area but their positions on the TriAtlas do not coincide with the nebula recorded here. Nor is it marked on any other atlas I was able to check. But the TriAtlas might plot the Sharpless nebulas incorrectly. But photos on-line label this object as Sh2-209. The bright star at bottom right is Lambda Persei.
13999255 - This is the California Nebula, aka NGC 1499,in Perseus near the star Menkib,or Xi Persei,at bottom. While this is primarly an emission nebula, there is dust in the periphery forming some faint reflection nebulosity. The main nebula emits strongly in not only the red H-Alpha wavelength but also the blue-green H-Beta wavelength, thus the pink or magenta colour.
13900627 - The iconic Parks Canada red chairs at the waterfowl viewing pond at the entrance of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, on a moonlit autumn evening with the stars of the autumn sky rising in the northeast. Visible are Perseus, the W of Cassiopeia, and most of Andromeda, including the Andromeda Galaxy at upper right. The bright star at lower left is Capella in Auriga.
13900192 - The colourful region around Antares in Scorpius, the yellow star at centre. To the right is the globular cluster Messier 4. Above right of Antares is the smaller globular NGC 6144. Above are the nebulas associated with Rho Ophiuchi. The area is filled with reflection (yellow and blue) and emission nebulas (red and pink). The field simulates a binocular field.
13900190 - IC 1396, a large faint nebula in Cepheus, sometimes called the Elephant Trunk Nebula, though the actual “Elephant Trunk” feature is the dark protuberance just right of centre called van den Burgh 142 (vdB 142). Also in the frame at top (north) is the red star Mu Cephei, aka the Garnet Star.
13899635 - This is the central area of Cygnus and its bright Milky Way starcloud surrounded by red nebulosity. At left is the star Sadr (gamma Cygni) with the complex of nebulosity catalogued as IC 1318. At centre is the distinct Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888, a expanding nebula created by winds from a hot Wolf-Rayet star. At bottom left is the star cluster Messier 29, though looking a little lost in the rich starfields here. At top is the cluster IC 1311, looking more obvious than M29 but not observed visually and included in the NGC catalog. Odd. At far right are the large and loose star clusters NGC 6883
13897883 - This is a portrait of Cassiopeia the Queen that takes in the red emission nebulas in the constellation as well as recording some of the larger star clusters. The area is also laced with dark lanes of dust.
13897444 - Venus, very bright as an evening star, shines over the old historic Atlas Coal Mine in the Red Deer River Valley, Alberta, near East Coulee. The mine buildings are the last standing from many coal mines that operated in the valley up until the 1970s. The Atlas Coal Mine is now a museum and National Historic Site.
13998977 - The Veil Nebula complex in Cygnus, aka the Cygnus Loop or Cirrus Nebula. This is a remnant of a supernova explosion that occured 5000 to 8000 years ago. It features a mix of red hydrogen-alpha and cyan oxygen III emission for a colourful complex of lacy filaments. The components have the catalogue numbers of NGC 6992-5 (eastern component at left) and NGC 6960 (western component at right, through the star 52 Cygni),and NGC 6974 for the middle area at top called Pickering's Triangle.
13998294 - This is the region of the Milky Way that extends from southern Cygnus at top down into Vulpecula and Sagitta at bottom. Below centre is the Coathanger asterism, aka Brocchi's Cluster or Cr399. Above it is the blue reflection nebula Sharpless 2-83. The magenta emission nebula above and to the left is NGC 6820. A small red nebula above it is Sharpless 2-88. The bright star at upper right is Albireo in Cygnus.
13899982 - The colourful region in and around the Coathanger asterism in Vulpecula the Fox. The grouping is not a star cluster per se, though it is catalogued as one, Collinder 399. It is also known as Brocchi's Cluster. A true star cluster, NGC 6802, is located at the east (left) end of the Coathanger, as the small clump of stars. The area is also rich in faint nebulosity, notably: the Sharpless 2-83 reflection nebula complex above the Coathanger, and the small, round Sharpless 2-82 emission and reflection nebula below the Coathanger. The large area of red emission nebula at bottom right is not catalogu
13899695 - A self-portrait of me observing the total eclipse of the Moon on November 8, 2022, on a very cold (-25° C) morning at 4 am. Above the red Moon are the stars of Taurus including the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters.
13899011 - The Hyades star cluster with the red giant star Aldebaran (looking yellow here) in Taurus the bull in the winter sky. The field is similar to what a pair of large binoculars would show. I shot this from home Nov. 25, 2019.

13999549 - This is the waxing gibbous Moon (11.7 days old) near reddish Mars (above the Moon),and with reddish Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster below. All are set in a swirl of clouds, looking like they are in an interstellar nebula. Diffraction from ice crystals in the clouds adds the colourful corona around the Moon. This was the Moon-Mars conjunction of January 3,2023. Mars was then about a month past opposition.
13898160 - The large star-forming region of IC 1396 in Cepheus, taken September 5, 2018 from home in southern Alberta. The wide field includes the bright orange star Mu Cephei, or Herschel’s Garnet Star, at top. The Elephant Trunk Nebula is at centre. North is at top.
13897783 - The large star-forming region of IC 1396 in Cepheus, taken September 4, 2018 from home in southern Alberta. The wide field includes the bright orange star Mu Cephei, or Herschel’s Garnet Star, at upper left. The Elephant Trunk Nebula is just right of centre. North is at top.
13899241 - This is a portrait of the southern region of Cepheus the King that takes in the red emission nebulas in the constellation. The area is also laced with dark lanes of dust.
13900128 - A mosaic of the Sword and Belt region of Orion the Hunter, showing the diverse array of colourful nebulas in the area, including: curving Barnard’s Loop, the Horsehead Nebula below the left star of the Belt, Alnitak, and the Orion Nebula itself as the bright region in the Sword.

Those bright nebulas are set amid a complex of fainter nebulosity, notably the Clamshell Nebula at left,as it has become known recently, and catalogued as Sharpless 2-119. At bottom right is the curving Cygnus Arc,aka IC 5068. The small star cluster NGC 7044 is below the Clamshell.
13900291 - The northern summer Milky Way setting over the mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, with warm golden lighting supplied by the rising waning Moon (behind the camera) illuminating the landscape and sky in a “moonstrike” effect. Taken on September 21, 2019, in frames taken as part of a time-lapse. Faint bands of red airglow tint the sky, though the blue sky colour is from the moonlight. This is taken during the lunar “golden hour.”
13999701 - A panorama of the Milky Way on a February winter night over the Badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,Alberta. The panorama extends from Canis Major low on the horizon to Perseus at top near the zenith. Orion is at right of centre, with Gemini to the left and Taurus and Auriga above Orion. Mars is the bright reddish object in Taurus aboce similarly coloured but dimmer Aldebaran, itself amid the Hyades star cluster. The blue Pleiades is at upper right. Sirius is the bright star at bottom. The image takes in the complete Winter Hexagon (aka the Winter Circle) of bright stars.
