14249316 - This frames two contrasting nebulas on the border of Canis Major and Monoceros. At top is the large Seagull Nebula or IC 2177, an area of mostly red hydrogen-alpha emission and is a region of star formation, though it contains some blue reflection nebulas.
14249010 - This frames the Australian aboriginal "Dark Emu" made of dark dust lanes in the Milky Way as it rises in the east. The spectacular southern reaches of the Milky Way from Centaurus to Carina shine above high in the south, including the Southern Cross. The dark Coal Sack beside the Cross is the head of the Emu. Her neck is the dark lane that splits the Milky Way starting at the star Alpha Centauri and extending down and into Scorpius, here rising above the trees.
14248996 - This is Messier 1, the first entry in Charles Messier's 18th century catalogue of deep-sky objects that were not to be mistaken for comets, his real quest. It is also NGC 1952, or the Crab Nebula, from the Earl of Rosse's 19th century description and naming. It is north of the lower horn of Taurus the Bull. This is a remnant cloud of debris expanding away from a supernova explosion that was witnessed in 1054 CE. All that's left of the progeniitor star now is a neutron star forming a spinning pulsar at the heart of the explosion debris. Some red H-alpha tendrils are obvious around the extremity
14248797 - This fish-eye lens view takes in the southern Milky Way, from Scorpius rising at lower left in the east (though partly behind trees here), to Orion setting at upper right in the west. At centre are the bright starclouds of Carina and Centaurus, along with the Southern Cross, Crux, and the dark Coal Sack. To the left of the Coal Sack are the stars Alpha and Beta Centauri, the Pointers.
14249201 - This is a framing of the vast Gum Nebula in the southern Milky Way, that sprawls over the constellations of Vela and Puppis. It is listed as object #12 in the catalog of southern nebulas compiled in the 1950s by Australian astronomer Colin Gum. It is perhaps a supernova remnant (not to be confused with the smaller Vela Supernova Remnant that is within the Gum Nebula) or is a large and old H-Alpha star-forming region. It is nearby in the Milky Way, at about 1500 light years from us. Smaller components of it carry other catalogue numbers such as Gum 15 and Gum 17.
71463561 - Alpha Romeo, vintage car, houses in the old town, Aix-en-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
14249347 - This frames most of the intricate arcs and loops of the Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR), the remains of a star that exploded about 11,000 years ago. It is one of the closest SNRs to Earth, about 900 light years away. Most arcs and segments have no separate catalogue numbers, with the exception of the short straight Pencil Nebula, aka Herschel's Ray, in the lower left corner which is NGC 2736. It is the brightest segment of the Vela SNR visually in a telescope. The nebula complex is marked with lots of cyan arcs emitting oxygen III wavelengths, mixed with regions of red hydrogen-alpha emission.
14249066 - This frames the dark Coal Sack nebula in Crux, the Southern Cross, here recorded as multiple dark lanes, though to the eye the Coal Sack appears as one solid dark region in the Milky Way. The bright star at bottom is Acrux, or Alpha Cruxis, while the star at top is Becrux, or Beta Cruxis. Acrux is a superb double star in a telescope but it is not resolved here at this scale.
14248893 - This is a panorama of the southernmost portion of the Milky Way, from the stars Alpha and Beta Centauri at far left, to Sirius, the brightest nighttime star, at far right. The second brightest star, Canopus, is included at lower right.
14248969 - The nearest bright star to our solar system, Alpha Centauri (aka Rigel Kentaurus) on the left and blue Beta Centauri on the right. Alpha and Beta are unrelated — Alpha is 4.2 light years away while Beta is 390 light years away. Together they are called the Pointers as they point to the Southern Cross, to avoid confusing it with the False Cross nearby. Alpha is a close double star, one of the finest for small telescopes, but it is not resolved at this image scale.
13900257 - This is a framing of the rich complex of nebulosity in and around the constellations of northern Cygnus and southern Cepheus, in a blend of "white light" images and images shot through a deep red hydrogen-alpha filter that isolates the red emission line from the gas clouds, bringing them out in much more detail than is otherwise possible.

13820504 - Alpha male Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) Grey Wolf humorous water shake portrait after crossing creek, Montana, USA.
13999365 - This is a framing of most of the constellation of Perseus, with the core region, the group of stars called the Perseus OB Association surrounding Alpha Persei,or Mirphak,at left and above centre. The large group is also called Melotte 20 or the Perseus Moving Cluster.
13899335 - Splendours of the southern Milky Way from Vela (at top right) to Centaurus (at bottom left), including the Carina Nebula, Crux and Coal Sack, and Alpha and Beta Centauri. A part of the huge Gum Nebula is at far right. The False Cross is at right, with the large cluster NGC 2516, the Diamond Cluster, below it. The globular cluster Omega Centauri is at upper left.

13776392 - Female Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) ecavating her redd while alpha male guards. Aspect Ratio = 4:5; Alaska, United States of America
13998507 - This is the pair of mismatched globular star clusters,Messier 53 (on the right) and NGC 5053 in Coma Berenices. M53 is a rich cluster while NGC 5053 is fainter and rather poorly populated. The difference is intrinsic as both clusters lie about the same distance away, some 53,000 light years. The brightest star at lower right is Diadem,or Alpha Comae Barenices. A number of faint and tiny IC,PGC and UGC galaxies dot the field.
13898068 - The centre of the Galaxy region in Sagittarius and Scorpius overhead in the wee hours of an April morning in Australia. At upper right are Alpha and Beta Centauri, while at lower left is Altair.
13898044 - A portrait of the constellation of Orion taken in monochrome in the deep red light of the hydrogen-alpha wavelength using a narrowband filter, to emphasize the vast clouds of interstellar gas within and around Orion.
13897417 - Comet Hartley 2 near the Pacman Nebula, NGC 281, in Cassiopeia. Stack of 4 x 6 minute exposures at ISO 1600 with Canon 5D MkII on A&M 105mm apo refractor at f/4.8 with Borg reducer/flattener. Bright star is Alpha Cas, Schedar. Autoguided with Celestron NexGuide autoguider. However, image of comet core is from only one exposure to minimize trailing from this fast-moving comet.
13820562 - Beta male Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) Grey Wolf fending off alpha female advances in fresh winter snow, Montana, USA.
13999255 - This is the California Nebula, aka NGC 1499,in Perseus near the star Menkib,or Xi Persei,at bottom. While this is primarly an emission nebula, there is dust in the periphery forming some faint reflection nebulosity. The main nebula emits strongly in not only the red H-Alpha wavelength but also the blue-green H-Beta wavelength, thus the pink or magenta colour.
13899816 - This is a framing of the rich complex of nebulosity in and around the constellation of Cygnus, in a blend of "white light" images and images shot through a deep red hydrogen-alpha filter that isolates the red emission line from the gas clouds, bringing them out in much more detail than is otherwise possible.
13899503 - A framing of most of the constellation of Perseus, with the brightest star in the constellation, Mirfak or Alpha Persei at centre. At lower right is Algol, the Demon Star. At top is the Double Cluster of stars, aka NGC 868 and 884, while at top left is the Heart and Soul Nebula complex, aka IC 1805 and IC 1848. The small star cluster NGC 1245 lies between Mirfak and Algol. The bright Messier cluster M34 is just off frame at right. The bright blue stars surrounding Mirfak are the Perseus OB3 Association, or Melotte 20, aka the Alpha Persei Moving Group.
13998977 - The Veil Nebula complex in Cygnus, aka the Cygnus Loop or Cirrus Nebula. This is a remnant of a supernova explosion that occured 5000 to 8000 years ago. It features a mix of red hydrogen-alpha and cyan oxygen III emission for a colourful complex of lacy filaments. The components have the catalogue numbers of NGC 6992-5 (eastern component at left) and NGC 6960 (western component at right, through the star 52 Cygni),and NGC 6974 for the middle area at top called Pickering's Triangle.
13900602 - The amazing area of the southern Milky Way in Carina and Crux, the brightest part of the Milky Way after the galactic core region. At right is the Carina Nebula, with the Southern Pleiades cluster, IC 2602, below it. The Football Cluster, NGC 3532, is at upper left of the Carina Nebula. At centre is the region of Lambda Centauri, with the star cluster NGC 3766, the Pearl Cluster, above the emission nebulosity. At left is the Southern Cross, with the dark Coal Sack at bottom left of the Cross, with thin tendrils extending to the right. To the left of Alpha Cruxis at the bottom of the Cross is t
13898520 - The morning sky of January 11, 2018, with the waning crescent Moon shining above the pairing of Mars (left) and Jupiter (right). The Moon and planets are in Libra just east (left) of the star Zubenelgenubi, or Alpha Librae. Left of centre, Antares and the stars of Scorpius are just rising in the dawn twilight.
