The name comes from the pioneer days when horses would get lost in the Badlands here and then re-emerge found, but with a new brand on them. The region is home to rich deposits of late Cretaceous dinosaur fossils. Just south of here is the world class Royal Tyrrell Museum, a centre of research into dinosaurs and prehistoric life.

An all-sky aurora with green and purple curtains, the night of June 7-8, 2014, starting up about 12:30 and going until dawn. This shot was near its peak, from the old barn site near home in southern Alberta. Foreground illumination is from the aurora and ambient sky -- the Moon had set. The Big Dipper is above the Barn. The purple colour is from blue scatttered sunlight hitting the red tops of the auroral curtains. This was with the 16-35mm lens at f/3.2 for 20 seconds at ISO 1600 with the Canon 6D.

I shot this April 4, 2015 on a partly cloudy night, with the nearly Full Moon rising in the east.

Mount Cephren at Lower Waterfowl Lake, in the light of the low waning Moon lighting the peaks but not the foreground. This is from the lakeside viewpoint on the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park, Alberta. I shot this on a very clear night October 13, 2022. There was enough wind to ripple the water and blur any stellar reflections. The Milky Way is to the left of Cephren, but is being lost in the brightening moonlit sky.

This is a blend of three exposures: a 44-second shot at f/3.5 and ISO 800 for the sky (with the camera on the Star Adventurer tracker to track the sky for the sharp stars) and an identical exposure with the tracker motor off (for the sharp foreground), plus a short 1-second exposure for the eclipsed Moon blended with its over exposed image. The Smoky Cape Lighthouse with its beams in the cloudy evening twilight shining in the light rainfall. This is near South West Rocks on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Built in 1891, the Lighthouse was staffed until the 1980s when all lighthouses were automated. It was converted from kerosene to electric in 1962 when it was also increased to 1,000,000 candela output. It uses a Chance Brothers 4-metre 9-panel 920m catadioptric lens.
