This captures a panorama of the northern sky over the foreground landscape of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, with the waning Moon rising, and an arc of Northern Lights above the northern horizon. A Kp6 show was forecast for this night but nothing spectacular materialized -- we had just a quiescent arc across the north.

Venus, very bright as an evening star, shines over the old historic Atlas Coal Mine in the Red Deer River Valley, Alberta, near East Coulee. The mine buildings are the last standing from many coal mines that operated in the valley up until the 1970s. The Atlas Coal Mine is now a museum and National Historic Site.

The pioneer cabin was the home of the legendary western author and movie star Will James, born Ernest Dufault in Quebec. He lived in this cabin when he worked the ranches in the area. The aurora was excellent this night. This is a stack of 20 1-minute exposures at ISO 2500 with the 15mm full-frame fish-eye lens at f/3.2 and the Canon 6D. The foreground and point-like stars are from the first frame in the series.

The photo was taken on the occasion of the second return of Comet Petriew 185/P since its discovery 11 years earlier in 2001 at this very same location.

This captures the vertical sweep of the summer Milky Way over the foreground landscape of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. The image serves as a good illustration of the richness of objects, dark dust lanes and bright starfields along the Milky Way, from Sagittarius low in the south at bottom, to Cygnus at top. In between are Aquila and Scutum, with part of Ophiuchus at right. This was from latitude 50.5° North, where Sagittarius and the galactic centre are low in sky. The image serves as a good illustration of the richness of objects, dark dust lanes and bright starfields along the Milky Way, from Sagittarius low in the south at bottom, to Cygnus at top. In between are Aquila and Scutum, with part of Ophiuchus at right. This was from latitude 50.5° North, where Sagittarius and the galactic centre are low in sky.
