13999548 - This is a 180° panorama of the night sky over the hoodoo formations of Bryce Canyon National Park,Utah,at Sunset Point. The panorama extends from the northeast (at left) where the autumn Milky Way is rising,to the southwest (at right) where the summer Milky Way and galactic core in Sagitarius are setting. This was October 11,2023. The most notable feature is the prominent arc of green airglow bands across the eastern sky,a natural sky phenemenon. Perseus is at left in the Milky Way. At top at left is the Andromeda Galaxy,M31. Below it is the blue Triangulum Galaxy,M33. Jupiter is the bright ob
13999102 - On August 24,2023 the waxing gibbous Moon occulted the bright star Antares in Scorpius. This is the scene about 30 minutes after the star reappeared from behind the moving Moon, and so here is a close conjunction. I missed capturing the actual occultation reappearance, though that would have been in a much brighter sky. And the Moon was low in my sky and amid the trees, here purposefully included to capture the scene low in the south,as Antares always is in late summer from my latitude of 51° N. .
13998785 - The waning gibbous Moon in clouds above a combine harvester at work in a wheat field,on September 2,2023.
13998450 - This is the waxing gibbous Moon (11.7 days old) near reddish Mars (at upper right),both set in a swirl of clouds, looking like they are in an interstellar nebula. Diffraction from ice crystals in the clouds adds the colourful corona around the Moon. This was the Moon-Mars conjunction of January 3,2023. Mars was then about a month past opposition.
13998394 - This is the northern hemisphere autumn Milky Way from Auriga (at bottom) to Cygnus (at top,at the zenith) rising into the northeast over the hoodoo formations of Inspiration Point,at Bryce Canyon National Park,Utah.
13900415 - The summer Milky Way and Summer Triangle stars rising in the east at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta on May 14, 2018.
13900300 - Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) on July 27, 2020 from the Columbia Icefields (Jasper National Park, Alberta) from the Toe of the Glacier parking lot, looking north over Sunwapta Lake, formed by the summer meltwater of Athabasca Glacier. So this is a portrait of ice in the sky and icy water on Earth.
13900152 - This is Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over the badlands and formations of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, on the night of July 14-15, 2020, at about 12:30 am local time with it nearly due north and as low as it got for the night at this latitude of 51° N. A green and magenta aurora colours the northern sky also blue with perpetual summer twilight. Capella is at far right.
13899756 - The rising Full Moon of September 9, 2022, the Harvest Moon for 2022, coming up over a rolling harvested prairie field near home in southern Alberta, on a very clear evening.

13898154 - Comet Leonard (C/2021 A1) on the morning of December 10, 2021, with a 135mm telephoto lens for a field of view of 10° x 15°. The tail appears to be about 4° long here. Taken about 5:45 am MST. The distinctive cyan tint of a comet's coma is prominent. The comet was in Serpens at the time.
13898150 - The late-night spring Milky Way from my rural backyard in Alberta (latitude 51° N) on a fine May night in 2020, with the waxing Moon just setting and lighting the landscape and sky. Jupiter (brightest) and Saturn to the east (left) are just rising together at left, east of the Milky Way. West of the galactic centre at right is red Antares in Scorpius. The Small Sagittarius and Scutum starclouds are prominent at centre, with their various Messier nebulas and star clusters visible.
13897971 - Galaxy and glacier! This is a vertical panorama of the Milky Way Galaxy over Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier in Banff National Park, Alberta. The Summer Triangle stars of Vega, Deneb and Altair are at centre. The Scutum Starcloud is just above and setting over Victoria Glacier. The dark lanes of interstellar dust — stardust! — weave among the bright star clouds of the Milky Way.
13897786 - The rising of the almost Full Moon (1 day before full) on September 12, 2019, taken from home in a quick shot, looking over the old rake I often use for a foreground prop. The dark blue in the sky near the horizon is the shadow of the Earth rising.
13897676 - The galactic centre area of the Milky Way in Sagittarius behind the grand old barn near home in southern Alberta, on June 30, 2019. Illumination of the barn is from twilight to the north, but also from light pollution skyglow from the west off frame at right. The sky is blue from the perpetual summer twilight at this time of year.

13844482 - Salvadoran man work at a Corn tortilla dough factory in Suchitoto El Salvador. Corn has been a staple food in Central American cultures since pre-Columbian times
13806512 - Essequibo River, Guyana, South America. Longest river in Guyana
13998821 - This is a framing of the Cygnus Starcloud in the northern Milky Way,with the patches of red hydrogen gas throughout the region emphasized. The field takes in the "neck" of Cygnus, from north of Eta Cygni at left,to just south of Beta Cygni, aka Albireo,at right, with the field oriented along the Milky Way. Some of the nebulosity here is numbered in the Sharpless catalogue. For example, the faint arc left of Albireo is Sharpless 2-91. The brightest patch of nebulosity lower left of Eta Cygni is Sh2-101. The nebula in the botttom right corner is NGC 6820 in Vulpecula. The globular cluster M56 in Lyr
13998730 - The rising Full "Wolf" Moon of January 6,2023 over the Badlands of Horseshoe Canyon, near Drumheller,Alberta. The sequence demonstrates the changes in colour of the rising Moon from atmospheric absorption, and changes in its shape from atmospheric refraction.
13998600 - This is a portrait of the constellation of Cygnus the Swan, with the extensive patches of red hydrogen gas that permeate this area of the Milky Way emphasized. The field is oriented along the Milky Way.
13998597 - The Hoodoos formation near Banff,Alberta,on the Tunnel Mountain Drive, overlooking the Bow River and Mount Rundle, with the stars and Milky Way in the sky. Illumination is by starlight, twilight sky colours, and lights from Banff in the distance. The sky is bright and blue with summer twilight, and from the waxing Moon low in the sky behind Mount Rundle.
13900520 - The Heart Nebula (aka IC 1805) at right, and the Soul Nebula (aka IC 1848) at left, in Cassiopeia. The round nebula at top right is NGC 896. The star cluster at right embedded in the Heart Nebula is NGC 1027. Shot from home in Alberta on November 21, 2019.

13899801 - This is the field in Vulpecula the Fox that contains the famous planetary nebula, the Dumbbell Nebula aka Messier 27, at left, but also the faint emission nebulas NGC 6820 at right and Sharpless 2-88 above it. The small star cluster below centre is NGC 6830. A small star cluster, NGC 6823, lies embedded in NGC 6820. The field is yellowed by the interstellar dust reddening distant objects.
13898184 - The main complex of nebulosity in Cygnus, taken with a telephoto lens taking in a wide field of 15° by 10°.
13897570 - This is a panorama of Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, on the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, taken at moonrise on a very clear and mild mid-October evening. The glacier-fed lake appears its characteristic blue even when lit by starlight. It is not blended in from an earlier "blue hour" shot.
13897488 - The Messier star cluster M35 at top right, along with nearby faint nebulas: IC 443, the arc of nebulosity left of centre, and NGC 2174 at bottom right, all set in a very colourful starfield.
13999246 - This is a portrait of the complex of nebulosity in northern Cygnus, with many wreaths and arcs of hydrogen gas interspersed with patches and tendrils of dark dust of varying densities. The main nebula is the North America (NGC 7000) at upper left, with the smaller Pelican Nebula (IC 5067) beside it in the "Atlantic Ocean." At bottom right is the Gamma Cygni complex, aka the Butterfly Nebula or IC 1318,while at the bottom right edge is the small arc of the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888). The field is filled with other fainter nebulas catalogued in the Sharpless and DWB catalogues. Above Gamma Cygni ri
13998770 - Orion and Sirius over the moonlit badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,Alberta on Feb. 4,2023 with the waxing gibbous Moon providing the illumination on this very clear and mild night.
13998674 - This is the northern hemisphere summer Milky Way from Sagittarius (at bottom) to Cygnus (at top) setting into the southwest over the hoodoo formations of Bryce Canyon National Park Utah.
13900557 - A close-up of the rising Sun on April 5, 2019, from home, and shot through the 66mm refractor and 1.4x Extender for 650mm focal length.
13900261 - The stars of the Big Dipper over the iconic peak of Pyramid Mountain from Pyramid Island, a popular location in Jasper National Park, Alberta, for nightscape and aurora photography. This was on a very clear night in mid-October, 2022, with many aspen stands still in full autumn colour. The images for this scene were shot at moonrise, with the waning gibbous Moon off frame at right lighting the sky blue and landscape with warm alpenglow moonlight. As bonus, a short bright meteor and its orange "smoke" trail appeared on the sky exposures. I shot this during the first weekend of the 2022 Jasper D
13900142 - The summer Milky Way in Cygnus, with the Summer Triangle stars rising over the Hoodoos formations on Highway 10 near Drumheller, Alberta. A low-level aurora display tints the sky magenta and blue at left, making for an unusually colourful sky. The bright stars are: Vega is at top, Deneb at centre and Altair at bottom right.

13899854 - Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over a ripening canola field near home in southern Alberta, on the night of July 15-16, 2020. Light pollution from a nearby gas plant reflecting off low clouds adds the yellow at right.
13899765 - The Moon in total eclipse, on January 20, 2019, in a multiple exposure composite showing the Moon moving from right to left (west to east) through the Earth’s umbral shadow.
13899639 - A vertical panorama of the summer Milky Way over the observing field at the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party, held in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in southwest Saskatchewan, Canada, at a latitude 49° N. The Park is a Dark Sky Preserve. This was August 26, 2022 on a perfect night of stargazing under very clear skies. The Milky Way extends from Sagittarius near the horizon, to Cygnus nearly overhead at this time, so a vertical sweep of 90°. I've left the satellite trails in for this scene.
13899432 - Orion and the winter stars and constellations rising in the light of a first quarter Moon on December 2, 2019. This was from home in Alberta. Orion is above the trees with Aldebaran in Taurus and the Pleiades above him. At top left is the star Capella and the constellation of Auriga. At left of centre are Castor and Pollux in Gemini. Just rising amid the trees is Procyon in Canis Minor. Sirius and Canis Major had not yet risen. The timing nicely captures 4 of the sky’s best star clusters in a row across the sky, with the Beehive just rising at lower left, the Hyades at upper right, and the Ple
13899378 - The waxing 2-day-old crescent Moon setting over the front range of the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta, as seen from the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory, April 6, 2019. Earthshine is visible on the night side of the Moon.
13899282 - A wide-angle view of the total eclipse of the Moon of November 8, 2022, with the red Moon at right amid the stars of the northern winter sky and Milky Way, plus with bright red Mars at top. Above and left of the Moon is the blue Pleiades star cluster, while below it and to the left is the larger Hyades cluster with reddish Aldebaran in Taurus. The stars of Orion are left of centre, including reddish Betelgeuse, while at far left are the two Dog Stars: Procyon, at top, in Canis Minor, and Sirius, at bottom, in Canis Major.
13899237 - The constellation of Andromeda, with Cassiopeia at upper left, and Pegasus at right, rising over moonlit formations at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. Illumination is from the waxing gibbous Moon, low in the southwest so it is providing a warm light. The faint (in the moonlit sky) fuzzy patch of the Andromeda Galaxy, Messier 31, is visible at centre.
13898535 - The constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, and the asterism of the Big Dipper low in the north over Lake Edith in Jasper National Park, on a clear autumn night. Arcturus is at left setting over Pyramid Mountain.
13898171 - The northern autumn constellations of Pegasus (partially seen at right), Andromeda (across the centre), Perseus (at lower left) and Cassiopeia (at upper left) rising over moonlit formations at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. Illumination is from the waxing gibbous Moon, setting in the southwest so it is providing a warm "bronze-hour" light. The Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is at centre. The star clusters NGC 752, M34 and the Double Cluster are at left, as well as the Perseus OB Association of stars. Some of the small star clusters in Cassiopeia are resolved as well.
13898085 - Jupiter (bright at left in Pisces) and Saturn (dimmer at right in Capricornus) low in the southeast sky on a mid-September evening in 2022. Jupiter was then nearing its opposition, and a close one at that in 2022, appearing brighter than it usually does at opposition. Jupiter appears below the Square of Pegasus at upper left. This was from home in southern Alberta at latitude 51° N.
13897910 - This is Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over the Horseshoe Canyon formation near Drumheller, Alberta on the night iof July 10-11, 2020, taken about 2 a.m. MDT with the comet just past lower culmination with it circumpolar at this time. Warm light from the rising waning gibbous Moon provides the illumination. The comet’s faint blue ion tail is just barely visible even in the moonlit sky and low altitude. The glow of summer perpetual twilight at latitude 51.5° N still colours the northern horizon despite this being close to the middle of the night.
13897719 - The constellation of Andromeda with the famous Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31) rising on an early summer night at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. This was June 30, 2022.
13897557 - A bright green auroral arc with prominent red curtains, to the east in front of the winter stars rising. with bright Mars below centre and the Pleiades at top right. This was from home in Alberta on September 26, 2022.
13999436 - An ice crystal halo around the waxing gibbous Moon set in the winter stars of a January night. The 22° halo is most obvious and with a reddish and sharper inner rim.,and a bluish and more diffuse outer edge. But a faint inner 8° halo is also visible,a rare halo sometimes called the Van Buijsen Halo (according to Lynch and Livingston in their book Color and Light in Nature; Minnaert also mentions it in his seminal book The Nature of Color and Light in the Open Air). It is not a lens flare as shots taken with the Moon well off to one side of the frame still show the inner halo centred on the Moo
13999319 - This is the Perseid meteor shower over the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,in the Red Deer River valley in Alberta, with the summer sky above filled with about two dozen meteors from the annual shower on August 12,2023. The meteors all appear to be streaking away from the radiant point in Perseus at left, below the "W" of Cassiopeia. The meteor trails are shortest near the radiant point,as at that location they are coming at us head on. The Andromeda Galaxy is near centre.
13999304 - This is a framing of an array of emission nebulas in Cygnus: the bright North America Nebula (NGC 7000) at right, and to the right of it,the Pelican Nebula (IC 5067/8). Those bright nebulas are set amid a complex of fainter nebulosity, notably the Clamshell Nebula at left,as it has become known recently, and catalogued as Sharpless 2-119. At bottom right is the curving Cygnus Arc,aka IC 5068. The small star cluster NGC 7044,yellowed by interstellar dust,is below the Clamshell. The nebulas are marked by lots of structure and radial streaks, perhaps from magnetic fields.
13998959 - The sparkling winter stars and constellations over the moonlit badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park,Alberta on Feb. 4,2023. The waxing gibbous Moon is off frame at left providing the illumination on this very clear and mild night. Captured here in a vertical panorama from below the horizon to past the zenith.
13998672 - A widefield view of Orion's Belt and Sword showing the complex of nebulosity in the area. The three Belt stars are at top (L to R): Alnitak,Alnilam and Mintaka, with the dark Horsehead Nebula (B33) below Alnitak. Above Alnitak is the pinkish Flame Nebula,NGC 2024. At bottom are Messiers 42 and 43,making up the Orion Nebula, with the bluish Running Man Nebula above it,aka NGC 1973-5-7. Above it is the star cluster NGC 1981. Messier 78 is just on frame at upper left. Numerous other bits of emission and reflection nebulas populate the field amid a backdrop of faint emission nebulosity. The stars ar
13899635 - This is the central area of Cygnus and its bright Milky Way starcloud surrounded by red nebulosity. At left is the star Sadr (gamma Cygni) with the complex of nebulosity catalogued as IC 1318. At centre is the distinct Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888, a expanding nebula created by winds from a hot Wolf-Rayet star. At bottom left is the star cluster Messier 29, though looking a little lost in the rich starfields here. At top is the cluster IC 1311, looking more obvious than M29 but not observed visually and included in the NGC catalog. Odd. At far right are the large and loose star clusters NGC 6883
13899320 - This is the occultation of Mars by the Full Moon on December 7, 2022, in a composite showing the motion of Mars relative to the Moon. The motion here is from left to right. However, while this composite makes it look like Mars was doing the moving, it was really the Moon that was passing in front of Mars. But for this sequence I set the telescope mount to track the Moon at its rate of motion against the background stars and Mars, to keep the Moon more or less stationary on the frame while Mars and the background sky passed behind it.
13898799 - An illustration of a red auroral curtain mixing with the green auroral arc to make an area of yellow-orange in the aurora this night. This was from home in Alberta on September 26, 2022. It frames the stars of Taurus rising with bright Mars at left and the Hyades star cluster at right.
13898403 - The nearly Full Moon rising on March 18 near the date of the March equinox (March 20 this year) , so it rose nearly due east this night. This March Moon is also popularly called the Worm Moon.
13898163 - This captures a panorama of the northern sky over the foreground landscape of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, with the waning Moon rising, and an arc of Northern Lights above the northern horizon. A Kp6 show was forecast for this night but nothing spectacular materialized -- we had just a quiescent arc across the north.
13897773 - NGC 281, aka the Pacman Nebula, in Cassiopeia, near the bright star Schedir (or Shedar), at right, and below Achird at top.
13999530 - The stars of the northern sky over Castle Mountain in Banff National Park,Alberta. This was June 6,2023 on a very clear night, but bright with blue summer twilight at this latitude of 51° N in June. The W of Cassiopeia and the Milky Way are at right. Polaris is at top.
13999053 - This is a framing of the main area of central Auriga filled with an array of Messier star clusters and faint IC emission nebulas.
13998285 - An ice crystal halo around the waxing gibbous Moon set in the winter stars of a January night. The 22° halo is most obvious and with a reddish and sharply defined inner rim and a bluish and more diffuse outer edge. But a faint 8° halo is also visible,a rare halo sometimes called the Van Buijsen Halo (according to Lynch and Livingston in their book Color and Light in Nature; Minnaert also mentions it in his seminal book The Nature of Color and Light in the Open Air). It is not a lens flare as shots taken with the Moon well off to one side of the frame still show the inner halo centred on the Mo
13899645 - Jupiter (brightest), Saturn (to the left), and the Milky Way over the Saskatchewan River and the area of Howse Pass, on July 26, 2020. Mount Cephren is at left; the scene is framed to include Cephren. The nebulas and star clouds of the galactic centre area at right show up well on this very clear night. The bright Small Sagittarius Starcloud, aka M24, is most obvious, flanked by the star clusters M23 and M25 to the side, and the nebulas M17 and M16 above, and M8 and M20 below. The fuzzy globular cluster M22 is to the left of the large Lagoon Nebula, M8. Green airglow tints the sky.
13899372 - A selfie of me observing with the 20cm Sky-Watcher Dobsonian telescope on a June night in the backyard. Shot for a book illustration of accessories and observing. The sky is blue from solstice twilight as this was June 18, 2020. The galactic core is at centre; Jupiter is rising at left.
13899323 - This is the complex of nebulosity that has become known as the Cosmic Question Mark, a good name as its official designations are confusing.
13898806 - Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over some of the eroded hoodoo formations at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, July 14-15, 2020. Twilight colours the sky. In this case the foreground is mildly light painted with a warm LED light. This was from the Trail of the Fossil Hunters site.
13898682 - The autumn constellations of Perseus and Cassiopeia above, with bright Capella in Auriga and the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus, at bottom, rising in the northeast over Lake Edith in Jasper National Park, on a clear autumn night. The Double Cluster is at centre, above the larger group of stars around Mirfak called the Perseus Association.
13897976 - Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over a ripening canola field near home in southern Alberta, on the night of July 15-16, 2020. Light pollution from a nearby gas plant reflecting off low clouds and a rain shower adds the yellow at right.
13897908 - The Moon in mid-total eclipse, on January 20, 2019, with it shining beside the Beehive star cluster, Messier 44, in Cancer. This was the unique sight at this eclipse as it can happen only during total lunar eclipses that occur in late January. There was one on January 31, 2018 but the next will not be until 2037.
13897791 - This is the line-up of planets across the southwestern sky on December 6, 2021, consisting of (L to R): Jupiter, Saturn and Venus, with the 2.5-day-old waxing crescent Moon in conjunction below Venus. The Moon had eclipsed the Sun two days before on December 4, when it was on the ecliptic. Two days later it was below the ecliptic line. Jupiter and Saturn are in Capricornus, with its stars all visible here in the evening twilight. The three planets are nicely equally spaced. Such an array makes the ecliptic line visible.
13897703 - A line-up across the southwestern sky on December 5, 2021, consisting of (L to R): Jupiter, Saturn and Venus (brightest), with Jupiter and Saturn in Capricornus, with its stars all visible here though dim in the twilight. The three planets are nicely equally spaced here. Such an array makes the ecliptic line visible.
13897654 - This captures the vertical sweep of the summer Milky Way over the foreground landscape of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. The image serves as a good illustration of the richness of objects, dark dust lanes and bright starfields along the Milky Way, from Sagittarius low in the south at bottom, to Cygnus at top. In between are Aquila and Scutum, with part of Ophiuchus at right. This was from latitude 50.5° North, where Sagittarius and the galactic centre are low in sky. The Summer Triangle stars of Deneb, Vega and Altair are at top.
