14249418 - This frames the rich area surrounding the Galactic Centre, which is located at top centre here amid the dark lane of dust and above a small diffuse area of red nebulosity. To the left is the bright Sagittarius Starcloud, which contrasts with the dark lane that runs down the Milky Way. Nowhere else is there such a stark and sharp contrast between bright starclouds and dark lanes of dust. The star clouds show the yellowing effect of interstellar dust absorbing star light and reddening it.

14249220 - This is a demonstration of the crowded sky we now have, with all the trails being from Earth-orbiting satellites, with the exception of the tapered orange streak at lower right which is likely a meteor. This is a stack of 40 exposures taken over 70 minutes, layered to accumulate the satellite trails, not eliminate them, to show how many satellites crossed the field in the hour plus of the imaging. Are some SpaceX Starlinks? Perhaps, but there are many other satellites up there now.

13998834 - Auroral streamers or rays rather than curtains as part of the pulsating phase of the great equinox display of Northern Lights on March 23,2023. The rays have a strong vertical structure from precipitating electrons but were pulsing off and on rather than rippling. While the predominent colour is green, there is a lot of red and magenta mixed in. The rays appear to be converging up toward the magnetic zenith. This is looking south. Orion is at right.

The rays have a strong vertical structure from precipitating electrons but were pulsing off and on rather than rippling. While the predominent colour is green, there is a lot of red and magenta mixed in. The rays are converging upward to the magnetic zenith. This is looking northwest over my house. Above is a purple arct that has some characteristics of a STEVE arc but is likely a standard vertical curtain. At right are Venus and the crescent Moon below, above the glow of twilight. Orion is left of centre, with Sirius embedded in the dunes arc. This is looking southwest to west. The time was about 9 pm MDT.

There are 33 meteors here. Note the fairly consistent green to red tint of each meteor streak. A couple of streaks look more white and might be flaring satellites though their trajectory matches where a Perseid should be.

14138222 - Remote fishing town of Khailino. An aerial photograph of Khailino from a MI-8 helicopter between Tilichiki and Khailino, shows the Vyvenka River linking these two communities. Flying north in Kamchatka, there are miles and miles of untouched tundra, streams, wetland, and rivers like this meandering, unconstrained river that is a perfect environment for salmon spawning; Khailino, Kamchatka Krai, Russia
13999474 - This is the field containing the assortment of open star clusters near the star Delta Cassiopeiae,or Ruchbah,at lower right. The bright cluster to the left of Ruchbah is Messier 103. But the more prominent and richer cluster in the field is NGC 663,aka the Letter S Cluster,at left of centre. Below it is the smaller NGC 659,while above it is NGC 654. The yellowed cluster at upper left is IC 166,while the small cluster above M103 is Trumpler 1. So there are clusters in this field from several catalogues. A small bit of reflection (?) nebulosity unidentified on any print or digital atlas I have s
13899016 - The colourful region around yellow Antares (bottom) in Scorpius and blue Rho Ophiuchi (top) in Ophiuchus. The nebulas are largely reflection nebulas, taking on the colour of the stars embedded in the nebulas. However, the field also contains a lot of emission nebulosity, hydrogen gas glowing red and magenta. Plus there are fingers of brown dark dusty nebulosity. It is one of the most colourful regions of the sky.
13898053 - An image of the entire sky and summer Milky Way, from home in southern Alberta, from my backyard, on September 12, 2015. The night was clear but not that transparent, as some humidity and haze added more than usual horizon glows reflecting yellow light pollution. But there was no aurora, in a week filled with auroras every night. The prominent red nebula overhead is the North America Nebula in Cygnus. South is at bottom, west to the right.
13898023 - Circumpolar star trails over the historic but sadly neglected St. Anthony’s Church between Bow Island and Etzikom, Alberta. The Big Dipper is at left, Polaris at top. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1911 by English, Russian German immigrants. It served a dwindling congregation until 1991 when it closed. At that time workers found a time capsule from 1915 with names of the priest and parisioners of the day. In summer of 2014 the Church suffered its latest indignity when the iron cross on its steeple tower was stolen. It was there when I stopped at this Church on a site scouting trip in M
13897908 - The Moon in mid-total eclipse, on January 20, 2019, with it shining beside the Beehive star cluster, Messier 44, in Cancer. This was the unique sight at this eclipse as it can happen only during total lunar eclipses that occur in late January. There was one on January 31, 2018 but the next will not be until 2037.
13848780 - Sulphur Worker at Kawah Ijen, Java, Indonesia. Kawah Ijen is a volcano with an active crater and acid lake in East Java, Indonesia. It is an unbelievable and unmissable destination for anyone visiting Java or Bali. Not only is the view on the 4km walk up to the craters edge impressive, but what goes on there is mind boggling. Walking down to the bottom of Kwah Ijen (Ijen Crater), hundreds of Indonesian men, many in flipflops, are mining sulphur from the heart of the volcano. They load their baskets up with up to 80kg of sulphur, before starting the arduous and extremely dangerous scramble up 3
