14249247 - This is a wide-field view of the April 8, 2024 total eclipse of the Sun, taking in the bright planets Jupiter (at top) and Venus (below) that were easily visible to the unaided eye during totality. Here the Sun appears only as its outer atmosphere, the corona, in shades of yellow and blue, surrounding the dark disk of the Moon.
14248603 - The waxing crescent Moon near Jupiter on the evening of March 14, 2024, setting into the western twilight sky on an austral autumn evening. The Moon is in thin cloud adding the colourful lunar "corona" around it from diffraction from the cloud's water droplets. Earthshine is visible on the "dark side of the Moon."

13899624 - A superb display of aurora borealis seen on March 14, 2016 when it reached Level 5 storm levels. Here it begins in the evening twilight and in the light of the 6-day-old Moon. Jupiter is at right. This view is looking east.
13899576 - The galactic core area of the Milky Way over Maskinonge Pond in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta. Jupiter is the bright object at left, with Saturn dimmer to the left (east) of Jupiter. In the summer of 2020 the two planets were close together in the summer sky. Jupiter provides the glitter path on the water. Antares and Scorpius are to the right. Sagittarius is at centre. This was July 13-14, 2020.

The view overlooks the launch buildings of the old and abandoned Churchill Rocket Range. Jupiter is at centre, Orion is to the right.
13898367 - Jupiter (at right) and Saturn (at left) shining brightly in the sky and reflected in the still waters of Maskinonge Lake at Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, on June 17/18, 2018. 13899572 - The Northern Lights on Feb 16, 2015, as seen from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, in Churchill, Manitoba at 58° latitude, and under the auroral oval. The aurora appeared as skies cleared somewhat during a blizzard with high winds and blowing snow conditions. I shot these from the second floor deck of the Centre, out of the wind and off the ground. Jupiter is at right, the Big Dipper at left.
13899524 - Observing Venus in the evening twilight, at the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area in southwest Saskatchewan, May 2015. Jupiter shines above at left. This is a single 30 second exposure at f/4.5 with the 24mm lens and Canon 6D at ISO 2500.
13899105 - A moonlit scene at Turret Arch in Arches National Park, Utah, with Sirius shining through the Arch, Procyon above the Arch, and above it at top centre, Jupiter, near the Beehive star cluster. The stars of Gemini are right of Jupiter. The rising waning gibbous Moon provides the illumination.
13898436 - An arc of a Kp-5 aurora over a wheatfield from home in southern Alberta. The panorama takes in the northern stars, from the Big Dipper and Ursa Major at left, to the W of Cassiopeia at top right of centre, with Perseus below Cassiopeia, and Andromeda and Pegasus at right. Moonlight from the waxing gibbous Moon low in the southwest illuminates the scene. Jupiter is rising at far right low in the southeast. This was taken when the display was at its most active. An hour later as it was fading STEVE appeared in a fabulous show.
13898229 - The Celestron GPS8 scope looking at M22 in the Milky Way in the light of the rising waxing gibbous Moon, from the backyard July 21, 2019. Jupiter is bright at right, Saturn at left.
13898085 - Jupiter (bright at left in Pisces) and Saturn (dimmer at right in Capricornus) low in the southeast sky on a mid-September evening in 2022. Jupiter was then nearing its opposition, and a close one at that in 2022, appearing brighter than it usually does at opposition. Jupiter appears below the Square of Pegasus at upper left. This was from home in southern Alberta at latitude 51° N.
13898071 - Mars, Venus and Jupiter (in that order from top to bottom) in a triangle, in conjunction, at an old farmstead near Vulcan, Alberta, in the morning twilight, October 28, 2015. Illumination is from the nearly Full Hunter’s Moon in the west. The trio of planets were in Leo in a fine conjunction not to be repeated until November 21, 2111. Almost all of Leo is visible here, with Regulus, the constellation’s brightest star, just to the right of the windmill blades at top.

Mount Cephren is at left; the scene is framed to include Cephren. The nebulas and star clouds of the galactic centre area at right show up well on this very clear night. The bright Small Sagittarius Starcloud, aka M24, is most obvious, flanked by the star clusters M23 and M25 to the side, and the nebulas M17 and M16 above, and M8 and M20 below. The fuzzy globular cluster M22 is to the left of the large Lagoon Nebula, M8. Green airglow tints the sky.

The Moon and planets are in Libra. Left of centre, Antares and the stars of Scorpius are just rising in the dawn twilight.
13897791 - This is the line-up of planets across the southwestern sky on December 6, 2021, consisting of (L to R): Jupiter, Saturn and Venus, with the 2.5-day-old waxing crescent Moon in conjunction below Venus. The Moon had eclipsed the Sun two days before on December 4, when it was on the ecliptic. Two days later it was below the ecliptic line. Jupiter and Saturn are in Capricornus, with its stars all visible here in the evening twilight. The three planets are nicely equally spaced. Such an array makes the ecliptic line visible.
13897703 - A line-up across the southwestern sky on December 5, 2021, consisting of (L to R): Jupiter, Saturn and Venus (brightest), with Jupiter and Saturn in Capricornus, with its stars all visible here though dim in the twilight.
