71454488 - Lost Place enthusiasts will get their money's worth here: in the UFO Village in Wanli near Taipei/Taiwan, a settlement of Futuro and Venturo houses by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen is left to decay. Once planned as a holiday resort on the South China Sea, the idiosyncratic buildings now stand there like wrecked mini spaceships.
14249392 - Eroded Cutler sandstone on Fossil Point along the Shafer Trail by the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. The Bears Ears National Monument is at left, across the river, with Canyonlands National Park in back. Note: The drone was flown legally outside the boundaries of the parks.
14249298 - This is the bright reflection nebula complex that includes Messier 78 (the largest blue-white nebula) and NGC 2071 above it. They are set in a region of dark clouds of interstellar dust, and framed by the red-magenta arc of the emission nebula known as Barnard's Loop, aka Sharpless 2-276. The small reflection nebula at upper left on the edge of another dark cloud is van den Bergh 62. The large star cluster left of centre on the edge of the Loop is NGC 2112.
14249227 - There's no richer and more colourful area of the sky than this field encompassing the Galactic Center in Sagittarius at left and the constellation of Scorpius seen in full here at centre and at right. The Dark Horse prances at top with dark tendrils of dust r.eaching down to yellow Antares and the colourful emission and reflection nebulas of the Rho Ophuichi area.
14249216 - This is the sequence of the total eclipse of the Sun over the waters of Lac Brome, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada, on April 8, 2024. Onto the base single exposure of the totally eclipsed Sun set in the darkened eclipse sky I have layered in images of the pre- and post-totality partial phases taken every 5 minutes from the start to the end of the eclipse. As the Sun moved across the sky from left to right, the Moon moved across the disk of the Sun from right to left.
14249162 - This is a panorama or mosaic of the rich region in the tail of Scorpius — from the bright star cluster Messier 7 at upper left embdded in bright Milky Way starclouds, to the large star cluster NGC 6124 amid dusty dark lanes at lower right.
14249102 - This is a 270° panorama of the May 10/11, 2024 great aurora display, when the Kp Index reached 8 this night bringing aurora to as far south as the southern U.S. Here, from my home in southern Alberta, Canada (latitude 51° N) it is exhibiting very odd vertical blue and magenta rays across the northwestern (left) and northern and eastern sky (centre), green and red bands to the southeast (right), and an odder bright patch to the south high at top. This was toward the end of the main activity of the show for me this night, at about 2:20 am. These distinctive blue rays appeared like this only at t
14248989 - The stars and clouds trail across the sky over Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, and Mt. Custer across the border in Glacier National Park in Montana. The sky and mountains are illuminated by a waxing crescent Moon off frame to the right, setting in the northwest. The stars of Scorpius are rising at left. Some ice remains in this alpine lake, as this was early June 2024. Wind and the long exxposures blurs the lake surface and reflections. The hill at left is scarred by the 2017 forest fire.
14248977 - The twin cupolas of the Inmobiliaria Building, center, with the tower of the Palacio Barolo at left. Buenos AIres, Argentina.
14248969 - The nearest bright star to our solar system, Alpha Centauri (aka Rigel Kentaurus) on the left and blue Beta Centauri on the right. Alpha and Beta are unrelated — Alpha is 4.2 light years away while Beta is 390 light years away. Together they are called the Pointers as they point to the Southern Cross, to avoid confusing it with the False Cross nearby. Alpha is a close double star, one of the finest for small telescopes, but it is not resolved at this image scale.
14248855 - A weak Kp1-level aurora with a hint of dual parallel arcs in the northeast seen in a moonlit sky, February 14, 2024, from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Churchill, Manitoba. Arcturus is at right, Vega at lower left. The waxing crescent Moon provides the illumination and blue sky.
14248786 - This is a composite showing the complete sequence of the April 8, 2024 eclipse of the Sun, from first contact (at upper left) to last contact (at lower right), with totality at mid-eclipse in the middle.

13999315 - Comet Nishimura (C/2023 P1),at left, captured at dawn on September 7,2023 with the sky beginning to brighten with morning twilight colours. Plus the last quarter Moon was lighting the sky and landscape with moonlight. The comet appears with Venus,at right, beginning its morning sky appearance for 2023/24. In addition, the star cluster Messier 44,the Beehive,is at top right. The smaller Messier 67 star cluster is just above Venus.
13999116 - This is a 270° panorama of the auroral arc seen across the northern sky on January 14,2023. It is framed between the setting summer Milky Way (at left in the northwest) and the rising winter Milky Way (at right in the southeast).
13999043 - The dusty blue reflection nebulas Messier 78 (bottom) and NGC 2071 (top) in Orion near the red arc of Barnard's Loop at left. A fan-shaped reflection nebula above NGC 2071 is not identified on any charts I had. Dark dust lanes run through the region and colour the sky brown. The tiny variable nebula known as McNeil's Nebula is below M78. Remarkably, some small 16th magnitude galaxies in the PGC catalog are recorded amid the dust at upper right in the frame.
13998813 - A rich starfield in the constellation of Vulpecula the Fox,in the Milky Way,with a mix of nebulosity. At bottom is the Coathanger asterism of stars, aka Collinder 399,or Brocchi's Cluster. At top left is the emission nebula NGC 6820. Other dark nebulas from the Lynds Dark Nebula catalogue populate the field. The blue glow above the Coathanger is reflection nebulosity which does not appear to have a catlogue number. A small reflection nebula around the blue stars at right is van den Burgh 126. The small round red emission nebula at lower left is Sharpless 2-82. The yellow star at top right is An
13998611 - This is a framing of an array of emission nebulas in Cygnus: the bright North America Nebula (NGC 7000) at right, and to the right of it,the Pelican Nebula (IC 5067/8). Those bright nebulas are set amid a complex of fainter nebulosity, notably the Clamshell Nebula at left,as it has become known recently, and catalogued as Sharpless 2-119. At bottom right is the curving Cygnus Arc,aka IC 5068. The small star cluster NGC 7044 is below the Clamshell.
13998564 - Auroral streamers or rays rather than classic curtains as part of the pulsating phase of the great equinox display of Northern Lights on March 23,2023. The rays have a strong vertical structure from precipitating electrons but were pulsing off and on rather than rippling. While the predominent colour is green, there is a lot of red and magenta mixed in. The rays are converging upward to the magnetic zenith. This is looking northwest over my house. A short exposure froze the motion and pulsations to better record the structure. Cassiopeia is at centre. The Pleiades are at left.
13998286 - The conjunction of the waxing crescent Moon with Venus (bright and below) and Mars (dim and to the left) on June 21,2023,summer solstice evening, with the worlds in clouds in the colourful twilight sky. Earthshine is just visible on the dark side of the Moon, despite the obscuring clouds.

13900618 - The galactic centre area in Sagittarius (at left) and Scorpius (at right) low in the south on a summer night at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. This was June 30/July 1, 2022. Being just 10 days after summer solstice and at latitude +50° North, the sky even to the south still has a blue tint from all-night twilight. I made no attempt to neutralize the sky colouration. In addition, some haze from smoke discoloured the sky and reduced transparency and contrast low in the sky.
13900517 - A complex of halo phenomena on the evening of April 15, 2022, Good Friday of the 2022 Easter weekend, around the almost Full Moon. Ice crystals in the high cloud created the halos and arcs, set in the spring night sky, with the Big Dipper at top, Arcturus to the left, and Regulus and Leo at right. The colours of the arcs and sundogs were just visible to the unaided eye.
13900479 - The Coma Berenices star cluster, aka Mel 111, with star glows added from haze in the sky to accentuate the star colours. The edge-on galaxy NGC 4565 (the Needle Galaxy) is at lower left; the spiral galaxy NGC 4559 is at upper left. Several other smaller NGC galaxies are in the field, which is similar to the field of view of binoculars.
13900448 - A 360° panorama of the winter sky over Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, on February 28, 2017. The Milky Way arches across the sky from south (left) to northeast (right). The Zodiacal Light stretches up from the western horizon at centre. The Gegenschein is faintly visible above the horizon at far left in Leo.
13900392 - Orion and the Winter Milky Way over the grand old barn near home. Sirius and Canis Major are at left, Aldebaran and Taurus, with the Pleiades at upper right. A glow of Zodiacal Light shines to the west at right.

Jupiter is the bright object at left, with Saturn dimmer to the left (east) of Jupiter. In the summer of 2020 the two planets were close together in the summer sky. Jupiter provides the glitter path on the water. Antares and Scorpius are to the right. Sagittarius is at centre. This was July 13-14, 2020.
13899552 - A framing of the major areas of bright and dark nebulosity in Cygnus and Cepheus, showing pink emission nebulas contrasting with dark dusty regions in the Cygnus and into the Perseus arms of the Milky Way. Cepheus is at upper left; northern Cygnus is at right, with the bright Cygnus starcloud right of centre. The reddening (or yellowing) effects of interstellar dust in the spiral arms of the Milky Way is apparent.
13899495 - The Geminid meteor shower of 2022, showing the radiant point in Gemini at left, above the stars Castor and Pollux. Orion is at lower right. Mars in Taurus is at top, to the left of Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluste, and below the Pleiades.
13899423 - The galactic core area of the Milky Way over Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta with the pairing of giant planets from summer 2020. Jupiter is the bright object at centre, with Saturn dimmer to the left (east) of Jupiter. In 2020 the two planets were close together in the summer sky. Sagittarius is at right. The Prince of Wales Hotel is the bright light source. This was July 13-14, 2020.
13899379 - This is a moonlit nightscape of the historic Hearst Church in Pinos Altos, New Mexico, at 7000 feet altitude (thus the name “High Pines”) and on the Continental Divide. In the sky above, the Big Dipper is at right, and Polaris is at left over the church.
13899287 - Mars is about to be occulted by the Full Moon on December 7, 2022. This is ingress with the eastward moving (i.e. right to left here) Moon about to cover up Mars on the Moon's western limb. The sky had thin cloud adding the colourful halo, or "corona," around the Moon, so the sky is not black.
13899265 - An arc of a Kp4 level aurora on August 28, 2022, from home in southern Alberta (latitude 51° N), showing the classic oxygen greens topped by oxygen reds, but with magentas and blues at left to the northwest where sunlight might still be interacting with the auroral curtains.

13898375 - An ice crystal halo around the first quarter Moon high in the northern winter sky, on January 27, 2015, taken from near Pinos Altos, New Mexico. The Pleiades is above and left of the Moo, the Hyades and Aldebaran at left. The green Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) is on the lunar halo at top.
13898346 - The 1910 Liberty Schoolhouse, a classic pioneer one-room schoolhouse on the Alberta prairie, at sunset as the stars are appearing, and with Venus in the clouds at left. Moonlight from the waxing Moon provides the illumination.
13898290 - The summer Milky Way over and reflected in the relatively calm water of Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park, on a mid-October night. The Jasper Sky Tram adds the lights on Whistler Peak. Bands of airglow tint the sky with red. Lights from the Jasper townsite, still mostly unshielded sodium vapour lights as of 2022, add the skyglow at left. Altair is the bright star at top. The red Lagoon Nebula is just setting behind the mountain skyline. The slight wind rippled the water enough to prevent a perfect reflection.
13898251 - The Pleiades star cluster and the other stars of Taurus rising above Mount Kerkeslin at Athabasca Falls, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, October 22, 2016. The sky is brightening with the rising waning Moon off frame at left. Some cloud adds star glows and hazy patches to the sky.
13898236 - Orion and Taurus (at top) beside the Milky Way, with Betelgeuse dimmer than usual at this time (about magnitude +1.3) during one of its fading episodes. The Taurus Dark Clouds are at top. Barnard’s Loop, apparently now thought to be a supernova remnant and not a bubble, is at lower left encircling Orion. The Rosette Nebula is at far left. The Auriga clusters and nebulas are at top, as is M35 in Gemini.
13898213 - The Carina Nebula, NGC 3572, and surrounding clusters. To the upper left is NGC 3532, the Football Cluster. The image frames the stars of Cassiopeia (upper left), Perseus (at left), Andromeda (centre) and Pegasus (at right). A couple of other fainter satellites are also in the image. Light from the almost Full Moon illuminates the sky blue and foreground a warm colour.
13897921 - Mars (near its brightest just past closest approach) shining over Two Jack Lake and Mr. Rundle in Banff National Park. Saturn is left of Mars near the trees, Antares below in the trees. This was June 3, 2016. Wind prevented reflections on the water.
13897757 - A horizon-to-zenith panorama of the winter consellations on a March evening as they set into the southwest. Orion is at bottom centre, with his Belt pointing down to Canis Major and up to Taurus. Gemini and Auriga are at top, in this case near the zenith overhead. The bright star clusters, M44, the Beehive, (at left) and M45, the Pleiades, (at right) flank the Milky Way. M45 is embedded in the Zodiacal Light. The star clusters M35 in Gemini and M41 in Canis Major are also visible as diffuse spots, as are several other star clusters. A couple of satellite trails are visible.
13897586 - A selfie of me gazing at the sky while the camera and telescope shoot deep-sky targets with the auto-guided equatorial mount and astrographic reflector telescope. An aurora is kicking up to the left in the northeast. Orion is rising at centre in the east. I shot this Thanksgiving evening, October 13m, 2015, from the backyard at home in southern Alberta. It is part of a 730-frame time-lapse.
